O’Neill wants to see more women in parlt

PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill told the national leaders’ summit last week to that it was time to get women into Parliament.
“Let’s take a small step with four first representing each of the regions and see how we can progress from there.
“There will be lots of legislative amendment but I want everyone to agree so let’s work together.
“We are going to support women leaders in Parliament. Let’s work on it will take some time.
O’Neill said one of the challenges and the international community continues to put pressure on the government in PNG is that there was lack the political leadership of women in the country.
He said they suggested that the best performing woman candidate in the last election could represent that region as a women’s regional member.
The leaders agreed that in the future elections women can continue to stand for elections and four best performing women candidates in each region would be appointed or nominated.
It was suggested also that if a women wins from the certain province then she represents that region while the other regions would be nominated out of the best performing candidates from the election results.
