A LAWYER representing former prime minister Peter O’Neill is defending himself against fraud-related charges pertaining to an alleged fake warrant of arrest for his client he provided to the National Court.
Magistrate Ernest Wilmot last Friday in the Committal Court in Waigani read to lawyer George Lau (pictured) charges of forgery, fraudulent uttering and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Lau, 40, of Kaipare village in Laiagam, Enga, is the principal of Niu Age Lawyers.
The matter was adjourned to Dec 20 for mention.
Lau is out on a K1,000 bail.
He was alleged to have colluded with Waigani Court Registry clerk Christine Moiyang by using court information obtained through her computer.
Police alleged that on Oct 15 between 8am and 5pm, Lau went to the Waigani Committal Court after being advised by O’Neill about the warrant of arrest issued by police.
Lau enquired at the registry about the warrant of arrest, notice of motion, supporting affidavits, police information and summary of facts.
Police alleged that the court information available was “unofficial” documents which Moiyang had obtained from police detectives on Oct 11. The original documents containing the notice of motions, summary of facts, affidavits and the original warrant of arrest were inside the chambers of Magistrate Cosmas Bidar.
Lau allegedly applied to the National Court with the forged documents for an urgent stay order and was granted. Police alleged that the documents submitted by Lau and O’Neill in their application to stay the warrant of arrest was forged and fake.
Lau was taken by officers of the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate for questioning and was charged for the offences.

  • This I believe is one of many such practices at all levels of governance. Corruption at the highest level. Whatever the outcome of the court will be exemplary.

  • He is one of PO’s crooks, shame on him and place a complete ban on him to practice Law. Fatty bulls who thrive on government cheques.

  • Being honest and wise in a position that requires responsibility gives courage to the person responsible and leads to a bright path other than that leads to wrong.

  • Professional Lawyer tried to make a profit on his law firm so that’s why he involved in such. Only judges will prevail on him whether he has to practice law in the country or else remove his law practicing certificate. Now are a days, not only lawyers involve in corruptions but all professions involve in corruptions. Not only MPs but also including church leaders and other public servants and private company employees,
