Online products miss scans

MANY people are ordering products from overseas through the internet which do not go through scanning at post offices and wharves, Chief Censor Steven Mala says.
“Many of these illegal products are ordered directly online and when they come into the country, they are not checked,” he said.
“Direct orders come through courier mail and not through scanning processes at post offices and wharves.
Mala said people were breaching the law.
He said when people were caught, they pretended that they were not aware of the penalties and fees but ignorance cannot be an excuse to break the law.
“It’s also very difficult for Customs and the censorship office to catch people because of technology advancement,” Mala said.
Mala said Censorship would be working with Customs to track down any prohibited items coming into the country.
He also urged the public to report any suspicious items sold on the streets and posted on social media.
