THE Chimbu police special operation “Weeding Grass” apprehended six alleged drug traffickers who reportedly smuggled marijuana into the province from Eastern Highlands.

Chimbu police Commander Supt Albert Beli confirmed that six young men aged between 26 and 33 from different parts of Jiwaka, Chimbu and Eastern Highlands were arrested by members of the operation in Kundiawa last Thursday.

Supt Beli said they were allegedly caught smuggling 4kg of dry marijuana leaves in rolls from Eastern Highlands to Chimbu to sell to consumers.

He said members of the special operation responded quickly after being tipped off.   They were under the command of coordinator Detective Sergeant Yatefa Welis.

“Tireless efforts by members of the special operation “Weeding Grass” resulted in a huge drop in production and consumption of marijuana in Chimbu,” Beli said.

He warned that police had “spies” strategically placed around the province, including Kundiawa town, to report to the special operations of  any suspicious activity.

“If you are thinking of trading drugs in Simbu, you have got to think twice,” Beli said.

Welis said they would continue to destroy marijuana gardens and home brewing depots to maintain law and order in the province.
