Papua New Guinean orchids have won two major awards at the world orchid conference in Singapore. The major award was the gold medal for a 100sqm display by the PNG Orchid Society. It also had beautiful traditional carvings decorated with orchid spikes, a bird of paradise sculpture made out of orchid flowers and orchid plants from the highlands and lowlands of PNG. Individual orchid plants won 15 awards with Mt Hagen’s Pint Kupal bagging five of the awards. The society also won the reserved champion overall for the best display. Local organisers took 18 months to plan for the event.
