THE National Capital District and Southern Leg of the Coca-Cola Ipatas Cup has been confirmed for January 29-30 in Port Moresby.

Eight teams have already been confirmed for the city leg of the challenge and they will be vying for a prestigious gold pass to represent the NCD in the Ipatas Cup semi-finals.

This was confirmed by the Ipatas Cup chief executive officer Timothy Lepa, who visited Port Moresby over the weekend to confirm and to gauge the strength of the NCD and Central teams.

Lepa said more than 24 teams had expressed an interest to participate in this year’s NCD leg but after careful consideration, only eight teams were confirmed — Brotherhood, Nanuatu Dusts, 6-Mile Tigers, Freeway Bumpers, Bang 36 North East, Waigani Iralai, Royals and 2 City Rabbitohs.

“We have already confirmed eight teams for NCD and are now in the process of confirming the teams for the Central challenge,” Lepa said.

“I expect a high standard of rugby league as well as professionalism from the NCD and Central teams since rugby league in the Southern region is supposed to be the best in the country.”

Lepa said the chairman of the Southern Leg, Simon Maima, would confirm the Central teams and announce them after the screening process carried out by his working committee of Brian Jemejeme, Bruce Hoge, Norbert Torato and Charlie Gorogo.

Lepa’s visit will continue this weekend when he visits the New Guinea Islands, West and East Sepik to confirm teams’ participation and eligibility for this year’s challenge.
