ORO Bay local level government (LLG), Northern, has its first female councillor after Rose Sipuna was elected councillor for ward 10.
Sipuna was among the 24 female candidates from Northern who contested last month’s LLG elections.
Acting administrator Trevor Magei said the people of Oro had taken ownership of the LLG elections which led to the 162 positions being declared including Sipuna as the only woman.
Magei said elections including campaigning, polling, counting of ballot papers, issuing of writs and the swearing-in of the presidents from the nine LLGs last week, had been incident free.
He said 854 candidates including 24 women contested for the 162 positions.
Magei acknowledged the election officials and the community for the show of confidence in ensuring a smooth and peaceful election process across the province.
The week-long swearing in of ward councillors and presidents was conducted in Popondetta except for Oro Bay and Kokoda.
