POPONDETTA’S Independence oval will undergo a major facelift early 2014 when K400,000 is released from the National Government’s Sports Enhancement Program Funding.

It is one of the icon sporting facility which stages major sporting competitions, national and international visits to the province

The Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology and Member for Ijivitari David Arore made the announcement during the recent Ijivitari Sports tournament in Popondetta.

He said the National Executive Council, through the Office of the Minister for Sports has approved K400,000 to assist with the sporting field in the township of Popondetta.

The funding is made available under the Sports Enhancement Program funds to prepare facilities and sportsman and woman to develop and improve their skills to be competitive lead up to the 2015 Pacific Games.

Arore, presented his contribution of K50,000 to the Ijivitari Sports Council witnessed by sportsmen and women from different Local Level Government in the Ijivitari electorate.

He said sports are a tool that the government would like to use to rehabilitate unemployed youths and identify sporting potentials to represent the province and the country as a whole.

Arore was vocal on the facilities and its upkeep because in three years ago he allocated K200, 000 from his District Suport Grant upgrading the grandstand and toilet facilities and a year later, most of the timbers and toilet facilities were removed by hooligans.
