Oro police carry out awareness

POPONDETTA police have begun carrying out awareness to inform the people of Northern of the provincial government’s decision to ban informal markets in public places.
Provincial police Commander Supt Michael Welly told The National that this was part of the enforcement exercise to regulate the laws on the total ban of betel nuts and cigarettes sale, buying and consumption in public places as per the amendment to the Summary Offences Act 2018.
“We have started by getting people to congregate at the designated area until the proper areas are put in place.
“As the law enforcement agencies, we are going to work on carrying out the awareness so people are fully informed of the laws.
“We are just polishing up on that so when Governor Gary Juffa had announced the provincial executive council decision, we were aware of that.
“My advice is to respect the law, wherever you are designated to sell your products and items, please adhere to the authorities to avoid inconvenience on your part as the vendors.”
The penalties included a fine of K10,000 or imprisonment.
