Oro to host Islands cricket

 POPONDETTA will host a regional cricket tournament next month.

Northern, Milne Bay, West New Britain and New Ireland are set to battle for bragging rights as the top cricket playing province outside NCD, Central and Morobe.

Madang which also has a local competition is part of the Highlands region.

According to Cricket PNG media officer Chris Amini the Islands regional cricket championship is the second event on the cricket calendar following the Highlands championships earlier in the year – won by Madang.

Sohe MP Delilah Gore will be the patron for the Cricket PNG-sanctioned competition. The tournament dates are yet to be finalised however it will be opened by special guest Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko.

Gore (pictured) said she was pleased and encouraged to see women already participating the local competition and looked forward to hosting the visiting teams.

She said the presence of the sports minister would be an ideal opportunity for Tkatchenko to vists some of the sporting facilities in the province and how he could assist the local district and provincial games.

Tkatchenko’s Sports Enhancement programme has seen a wide variety of codes benefit over the last three months from additional funding outside the regular budgetary allocations for rural and grassroots sport.
