ELA Beach restaurant operator Graham Osborne said from Cairns Australia yesterday he did not know why he was deported because he was not formally arrested and charged with any offence.
He said his personal friendship with Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare might have been the reason for his deportation.
“When the Supreme Court reinstated the Somare government, it was camping at the Ela Beach Hotel,” Osborne said.
“I am a businessman and they wanted to camp there and why should I not have the money rather than anybody else’s?
“They camped there very professionally … they paid their bills. I am not the owner of the hotel, I am the owner of the restaurant and the bar, so that is where it is,” he said.
Speaking to ABC’s Port Moresby office he said: “I still do not know why I have been deported … I was not arrested or anything … I was just escorted to the airport with a small bag and put on the airplane and that was all I know.”
Asked if he knew he was to be deported he said: “I didn’t know anything about it until 6o’clock in the morning, people came to my house… they certainly were not rogue policemen, they were people from Immigration … they had a search warrant, they searched my house, I take it that they found nothing, because I certainly was not arrested and they showed me some deportation papers signed by (Jamie) Maxton-Graham who is the acting Immigration Minister … and then they escorted me by car to the airport … they drove me around town because the plane was not ready to leave and when the plane was ready, they drove straight to the airport and I was put on the plane and here I am in Cairns.”
Asked what the search warrant was for, he said they were looking for pornographic material and drugs “which I do not have anything like that … so they obviously did not find anything because I was not arrested”.
With regards to his alleged involvement in the recent political impasse, he said: “My only situation with politics is that I am a personal friend of Sir Michael Somare and I think that is what it is.
“I’m not involved in any political party, I am not a member of any political party, I am a very good friend of Grand Chief Michael Somare, maybe that’s the reason.”
