STAFF of Oil Search Ltd based in its Sydney corporate office believe that books are essential for learning and acquiring of knowledge.
They believe that without books information and knowledge cannot be passed down from one generation to the next.
It is with this understanding that the Sydney staff donated books for children and teachers in its project foot-print areas – Kutubu and Moran in Southern Highlands province and Kikori in the Gulf province.
Apart from reading books reference books such as encyclopaedias, text books and dictionaries were also distributed – much to the delight of teachers and school children. School stationery items were also part of the donation.
The donation was managed by the Oil Search Women’s Network (OSWN) in Kutubu with the support of the Oil Search community affairs (CA) team also in Kutubu, Southern Highlands province.
OSWN is made up of all female employees and contractor employees in Kutubu/ Moro, Hides and Port Moresby.
It was a fully endorsed employee network.
Schools that benefited from the donation were Kutubu High School, Baguale Primary School and Waro Primary School.  Kikori High School in the Gulf province will receive its books soon.
President for the OSWN in Kutubu Lina Sanawe presented the books on behalf of Oil Search employees.
Sanawe encouraged head teachers and teaching staff to take good care of the books for the benefit of students and teachers.
She emphasised to the schools and communities that this donation was an initiative of employees overseas.
Sanawe was accompanied by OSWN community projects executive Christine Wanma plus two local female employees –Maria Tanda and Roey Konefabu.
The CA Field team was led by Marc Mulungu and Billy Ekanda.
Kutubu High School principal Norbat Semdip was pleased to accept the donation on behalf of students and teachers.
“On behalf of my students and staff, I would like to thank the employees of Oil Search and I assure you that we will take good care of the books,” Semdip said.
In Moran, the chairman of the Baguale Primary School, Mark Imbili was on hand to receive the donation and was surrounded by excited children who gathered to catch a glimpse of the books.
The expressions on the faces of the children demonstrated the joy that colourful illustrations of story book characters such as dragons brought to the lives of the young and even the young at heart!
Last year, Oil Search made a similar donation of over 1,500 books to students in the National Capital District, Southern Highlands and Gulf.
