OUR regular court coverage has been welcomed by a community in Lae because it is educational to the public.

Kay Takising, law and order chairman of the community in Talair compound, said community leaders in the area were happy to read court reports in The National.

He said the leaders believed the reports were not only educational but  taught people to stay away from crime.

Talair compound is one of the big settlements along Bumbu River.

Takising said not all members of the public were aware of various laws and the legal processes involved when one was charged with an offence.

He said by reading the types of punishment meted out to offenders, people would be discouraged to break the law.

He welcomed the advice and lessons to the public from judges and magistrates, such as those from Lae district court magistrate Nasaling Bingtau when making his rulings on cases.

Bingtau normally makes a short statement to the offender or the public  in the courtroom to start a day’s proceedings and has became quite popular.

“We would like to see more court reports. People in the settlement have learnt a lot just by reading and we enjoy it,” he said.
