POLICE personnel in East New Britain must strive to be honest and fair when performing their duties, a senior officer says.
These were the remarks made by retiring provincial police commander Chief Insp Joseph Tabali during a handover and farewell ceremony held in Kokopo yesterday.
Chief Insp Januarius Vosivai will be taking over as provincial police commander.
Tabali, who was in the position for six years, said law and order issues in the province were a big challenge for the police force and he encouraged the men and women of the constabulary to work in partnership with all stakeholders to combat crime and ensure East New Britain was a peaceful place.
Tabali told all four police station commanders (PSCs) – Rabaul, Kokopo, Kerevat and Palmalmal – that crime rates were rising and police needed to be committed, professional and efficient in the carriage of their duties.
He also reminded PCSs, sectional heads and senior officers to lead by example and practice restraint and fairness and to protect all citizens.
The outgoing commander urged them to work with related government agencies and departments enforce laws and ensure law breakers faced justice.
“I also want to encourage you my policemen and women to do what is expected of you, take ownership of your job and guard it well,” Tabali said.
He welcomed Vosivai and wished him well in his new post as the provincial police commander and appealed to police personnel and stakeholders to work with him continue to provide the best policing services for the people.
