PEOPLE and businesses between 11-Mile and Yalu Bridge in Wampar, Huon Gulf are concerned about the dust from the road.

Some kai bar and trade stores have closed because of the problem. Some are braving the pollution to sell fresh food, store items, buai, cigarettes, cooked sausages and bananas on the roadside market.

Provincial Works manager Kingsford Kasen said the Lae Chamber of Commerce had raised its concern. Kasen said a delay in funding from the Department of Works had hindered road maintenance work.

“That road portion from 10-Mile and onwards along the highway is within our jurisdiction.

“We have the dump truck and loader at the yard doing nothing awaiting funds,” Kasen said.

Miles Lodge owner Kwina Ambang said the dust problem had forced her to close the kai bar and the shop. “Our business deals with food and beverages taking into account consumer health and hygiene.”
