A HUNDRED and sixteen officers from the Papua New Guinea Correctional Service (CS) completed a two-week intensive training at the Bomana Training College on Friday and are set for deployment to the Highlands region.
The quick response unit made up of four platoons were trained on the specific usage of weaponry facilitated by trainers from the PNG Royal Constabulary and CS.
Police chief training officer Senior Sergeant Simon Pokou said the training was for preventing gun-related violence and deaths during this general election.
“We have gone through a tactical orientation training where we were introduced to safety equipment,” Pokou said.
“A counter-vehicle ambush drill was also done to make sure that we are prepared when fired upon while sitting in a car. We look forward to minimising the death rate.”
Pokou said the training included drills on how to apprehend suspects during a gun fight or a surprise attack.
He said the quick response troop was made up of members from institutions across the four regions.
CS Commissioner Stephen Pokanis said about 800 officers would be involved in the general election.
