Around 100,000 rainbow trout fingerlings were distributed throughout the Enga province, says Fisheries and Marine Resource Minister Dr Lino Tom.
Wabag MP Tom and the fisheries team distributed the fingerlings last week.
He said the distribution of the fingerlings was part of a pilot project that began in July which aimed to provide an alternate source of protein and improve food security in remote areas.
The fingerlings which are bred at Kalopa hatchery on the northern foothills of Mt Giluwe, in Southern Highlands were transported into Enga and distributed with the assistance of helicopter company Heli Solutions.
Tom said the fingerlings were transported in coolers and gently released to 12 different locations in Maramuni, Kompiam-Ambum, Kandep, Laigam, Wabag and Wapendamanda districts.
Heli Solutions chief pilot Captain James Pima, who flew the team last Tuesday and Wednesday during the exercise, said apart from being a source of protein for the people in the near future, the trout could also be a tourist attraction.
