THE Papua New Guinea Hunters have brought in teenage Hela Wigmen forward Stanton Albert into their 25-man squad for the Queensland Cup.
Albert is the younger brother of Kumul Wellington Albert and was a surprise announcement.
Nineteen-year-old Albert, along with Kumul five-eighth Dion Aiye are the two men who complete the Hunters squad for the 2014 season.
The squad had initially been short two by players after the dropping of Kumul prop Enoch Maki and centre Francis Paniu in the preseason.
PNG Rugby Football League board chairman Sandis Tsaka acknowledged the Kemele Construction-sponsored Hela side for helping identify and develop the youngster who – although not as tall as brother Wellington – is in the typical mould of a front-row forward with the work rate and size (109-kilograms) to compete at that Q-Cup level.
Tsaka said Digicel Cup clubs had been supportive of the Hunters by supplying players to them.
“The SP PNG Hunters would like to congratulate the Hela Wigmen on their junior development programme and the production line of young talent they are bringing through their ranks,” Tsaka said yesterday.
“It’s important that Digicel Cup clubs concentrate on developing their own juniors and this is a perfect example of that. Stanton Albert, pictured, is a good young man, has great potential and comes from a good family. The Hunters and the Wigmen share similar goals and Stanton will now get his chance to further develop as a player through his elevation to the Hunters 25-member squad. If Stanton does not make the 18-man SP PNG Hunters playing roster each week he will be available to play with the Wigmen each weekend in the Digicel Cup competition during the 2014 season.”
Wigmen chairman Andy Hetra said the franchise was pleased to release a product of its junior development programme to the Hunters.
“Stanton Albert has shown a good level of development and maturity in all facets of development as a player. Stanton has great potential and we are pleased that the Hunters have identified this,” Hetra said.
Stanton will be a valuable asset to the Hunters. Stanton is still raw but has the potential to develop into a top prop forward and I’m sure the Hunters can fully realise his potential.”
Hetra said the Wigmen had a good development programme which identified young talent and kept them in camp throughout the season.
“The Wigmen have other youngsters of Stanton’s calibre and will continue to develop them,” Hetra said.
