The International Organisation of Migration has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Police Department to address human trafficking.

With the agreement and within their respective mandates, the police and IOM joined forces to strengthen collaboration and mutual cooperation to attain better cooperation between the parties in  migration management.

Police Commissioner Gari Baki said police would   have a responsibility to address human trafficking.

“For too long the RPNGC (police) has not been put under the spotlight or has not been made aware of the fact that they are also responsible for any of these activities taking place, not necessarily in PNG but around the world too,” he said.

“We now realise that we have a responsibility to play our part in assisting the organisation dealing with issues affecting people’s movement.”

IOM-PNG chief of mission George Gigauri said IOM was there to make sure that government organisations like RPNGC made use of systems thatwould benefit Papua New Guineans.

United Nations representative Iwona Spytkowski said the agreement was an important partnership in migration management.

“The MoU outlines specific areas of cooperation that include counter-trafficking, human security, civil protection, of internally displaced persons and peace building,” he said.

“IOM has been assisting the RPNGC for more than six years.”
