TWO men who allegedly tried to bribe a police officer so he would not arrest one of their relatives appeared in court yesterday after they were charged with trying to pervert the course of justice.
The defendants Nickson Wali, 39, and Johnathan Waibma, 40, both from Yangoru-Saussia, East Sepik, appeared before Magistrate Tera Dawai.
The pair allegedly offered a bribe of K1,000 to arresting officer Const David Koila.
Const Koila had arrested Jimmy Nakon, who is related to Wali and Waibma, for cheating.
Police alleged that the incident occurred on Jan 15, 2021, at the Criminal Investigation Division drug squad office at the Lae Metropolitan Command.
Police reports stated that Nakon was arrested and charged for cheating a man by selling him a fake gold bar and obtaining K10,000 on Jan 13, 2021.
The two defendants allegedly advised that Nakon gave them K1,000 to give to the police officer.
They then went to the police station and gave it to the arresting officer in the presence of three other police officers.
They were then arrested, charged and detained.
Nakon appeared before the same court from custody charged with fraud – trying to sell a fake gold bar and obtaining K10,000.
The court allowed all defendants (Wali, Waibma and Nakon) from their respective mentions in court to make proper bail applications with guarantors to be considered by the court.
Magistrate Dawai adjourned the cases to May 5.
