Paita urges MPs to attend Parliament, be committed

MPs have been urged to remain committed in attending all Parliament sessions.
Leader of Government Business and Minister of Finance and Rural Development Rainbo Paita in his closing remarks at the end of the first session of Parliament for 2020, said MPs had been elected to represent their people and should attend all sessions.
“I want to thank the Members of Parliament who sat right through for this session,” he said.
“We as members, apart from a few leaders who have urgent things to attend to, but primarily we as legislators must give precedence and priority to the business of the government and that of the Parliament.
“And I want to thank the deputy Opposition leader Dr Allan Marat for sitting right through in the last two weeks.”
Paita said as a new government, they wanted to take issues head-on and the floor of Parliament was an avenue for them to debate on policies, not so much of politics.
“We must contribute effectively and in this government we have a chance to make many of the changes. We’ve been in government for the last eight or nine months, give us the chance to prove ourselves and make it work.”
Paita urged MPs to leave everything else aside and work together.
“In the last few media releases, I have taken the lead to move one or two members within this house who have been deceiving the people. If members of Parliament want to take a divided view, the right position is the Opposition and not government.
“When we come in the next session, we will be able to see a few MPs in the Opposition so that they are free to express themselves.
“Our government must be strong and if there is criticism, which we welcome.”
Parliament rose on Friday and return on May 12 at 2pm.

  • MPs who don’t attend parliament sittings should be considered as thieves stealing from this country (similar to tax evasion). There should be a law to imprison them.

  • All MPs must attend all parliament session. Why are they doing this? Those MPs not attending session frequently must be question as to why they’re away with valid reasons.
