 THE Papua New Guinea Palais won the Shield in the Australian National Women’s Rugby Sevens Championship at St Ignatius College, in Riverview, Sydney, yesterday.

They scored a convincing 64-5 win over Northern Territory, stunning fans who watched the tournament.

In pool play on day one, the Palais lost 40-0 and 42-0 to the Australia Oz Tag and Touch Football Australia respectively.

The tournament was won by the Australian Capital Territory, who beat Touch Football Australia 24-22.

ACT captain and Australian se­vens representative Sharni Williams was thrilled with the win and said the competition in women’s sevens continued to strengthen.

Queensland Red claimed the Plate final with a 24-14 win over New South Wales Blue. 

Victoria won the Bowl final with a 29-12 defeat over NSW White in a dominant contest.
