THE outgoing Commissioner-General of the Internal Revenue Commission (IRC), Betty Palaso, was yesterday surprised when told to open a facility named after her.
Palaso until yesterday did not know that one of the lounges in the newly-refurbished Large Taxpayers’ Service Centre had been named after her. She was led to the lounge by Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer Charles Abel who then informed her that it was named after her.
“It was a nice surprise to have a lounge named on my behalf. It’s an honor. I’m genuinely humbled by that,” she said.
She is leaving this week to take up her new post as Ambassador to the Philippines.
“Serving as an ambassador is also for me an honor to serve the country. So I’ll do my best there as well.,” she said.
Palaso said she was satisfied with what she had achieved with the IRC.
“For me it’s been an honour, privilege and a blessing working in the IRC as the chief revenue collection agency for the government,” Palaso said. “We are always under pressure. It was a challenge when the economy was struggling and the demand for revenue was there. But we did the best we could within the resources given to us by the government and we delivered the best we could.”
Palaso had served in the public service for about 35 years, 19 of which with the IRC.
