PAPUA New Guinea lightweight champion Raka Kauko Jr’s preparations for next month’s title bout have been boosted with the injection of K20,000 from the Pang family.
The sponsorship will see Kauko undergo training alongside mixed martial artist Adrian Pang in Brisbane, Australia, in preparations for his April 25 fight against Philippine champion Roldan Aldea for the vacant World Boxing Council-Asian Boxing Council lightweight title.
Kauko’s manager Jamie Pang said the sponsorship was in recognition of the national champion’s efforts to build his professional career and support boxing in the country.
“He’s a great fighter and I think he’s got what it takes to be a champion,” he said.
“He’s humble and polite, always gets the job done at training so it’s good we get behind him and let’s see PNG rise to the top.”
On Friday, Kauko said: “I am thankful to Jamie and the Pang family who have provided me the opportunity to go and train in Australia.
“To Oceania Fight Promotions (OFP), thank you for hearing my cries and giving me a chance at a title fight.”
Organiser OFP thanked the Pang family for assisting Kauko with his training under the PNG Integrated Mix Martial Arts Club.
OFP director Maryanne Millie called on other interested sponsors and the Government to recognise young and upcoming fighters.
