Paramana defeated competition leaders Mermaids 54-42 in a highly-contested match-up in round 10 of the Port Moresby Netball Association’s premier division last Saturday.
The match pitted a resurgent Paramana determined to cement their spot in the top-four against the number one team Mermaids, who have put in some impressive performances since taking the top slot.
However, it was not to be a Mermaids’ game this time around, as they looked sluggish on the court with missed shots on goal and wayward passing. Paramana seemed to want the win more as they outplayed the Mermaids in all aspects of the game.
Having an extra spring in their step, Paramana’s mid-court trio led by Gasi Moka controlled the centre third with their quick passing and defensive movements.
This forced the Mermaids into making uncharacteristic errors.
Paramana goal-shooter Marie Ottio put the finishing touches on the team’s overall performance with her excellent goal-scoring. On the defensive front, former PNG Pepe Ravu Raula kept the Mermaids shooters in check.
Even though the Mermaids found some momentum in the final quarter, it was not enough to overcome the 12-goal deficit.
In other premier division matches on Saturday, Rebels defeated Aroma Coast 65-53 and Mona finally posted a victory against Raukele 40-36.  The shock result of the round saw Telstars post a 15-point victory over defending champions Sparrows 41-26.
