The Kewabi Muli Catholic Parish in Ialibu, Southern Highlands, opened a shrine to Fatima yesterday.
Parish council Ali Vincent said the shrine was the first of its kind in the province and close to 5000 people from neighbouring parishes had come together to celebrate Fatima.
“Every year, Catholics would travel overseas to celebrate Fatima, however, today we have opened our own shrine to celebrate Fatima,” Vincent said.
“And we hope that in the future more people will like and pray and celebrate Fatima with us here in Ialibu.”
Vincent thanked the Catholic Bishop and the local community, including businessman Rodney Kalunda, who funded the building of the shrine.
The shrine cost K150,000 and honours the day when the Mary the mother of Jesus appeared to three children at the central Portuguese town of Fatima.
Meanwhile, Kalunda, a community leader and local businessman ,has called on the Catholic Church to manage and run the local sub-health centre and primary school.
He said it was time both the health centre and the primary school were given to the church to run to improve its services.
