Park in parking zones

PARKING in appropriate parking zones limits the risk of being hit by another vehicle according to officer in charge of 4-Mile Traffic, Inspector Philip Koliadi.
“Parking in the wrong place causes an obstruction to other motorists thus an accident is likely to occur,”
He said there has been an increase in reported cases of vehicle hit and run and in most cases, it is caused by parking at the wrong place and such cases is difficult to find the culprit without an eye witnesses.
“If the owner of the vehicle has a comprehensive insurance then the damages to the vehicle will be covered,” he said.
“A classic example would be the central business district of down town where it is always busy and thus parking becomes almost impossible, thus motorists park on traffic islands and flower beds,”
He said the Road Traffic Authority and the National Capital District is looking into this, to resolve the issue of limited parking space in the city.
“Traffic police has the job of controlling parking of vehicles in public streets so that other vehicles can move along without any of the parked cars getting in the way,”
He said under the Papua New Guinea Motor Traffic Act of 1950, parking in certain places or in a certain way is done by putting up sign saying that you can or cannot park in certain place and in a certain way.
“The sign no parking means that you cannot leave your vehicle parked at this place, unless you are just letting a passenger out and you are going to quickly drive on,”
“No standing means that you are not even allowed to stop at this place even for a few minutes to let passengers off,” he said.
He urged all motorist to park at the right place to avoid being hit by another vehicle and also being arrested by police for illegal parking.
