NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has committted K300,000 to back Port Moresby United as the flagship of the city in the National Soccer League Southern conference.
United take on Eastern Stars in their opener at the Papua New Guinea Football Stadium tomorrow (1pm kick-off).
Parkop unveiled the logo with Port Moresby Soccer Association (PMSA) president John Wesley and handed over a new set of uniforms to captain Junior Sasu at the Bisini Soccer Ground yesterday.
He said United were a team made up of PMSA players who were mostly NSL rookies.
Parkop said the support would see the players step up their game.
He said the National Capital District Comission was supportive of the city’s rugby league francishe, the Port Moresby Vipers.
“This team was once a champion side with the quality of players who play clean and fair football,” Parkop said.
“We are supporting sports in the city and will back other sports like netball.”
Parkop challenged the players to play for the city.
Gonjuan said Parkop was there to support and boost the morale of the team.
“This year, we put a team together for the NSL,” Gonjuan said.
“We are thankful for the support the governor has given us.
“We are fielding a team from PMSA for the first time in the semi-professional competition.
“The players are selected on merit, according to their outstanding performance in the domestic competition last year.”
