NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop led city residents celebrate World TB Day in Port Moresby yesterday.
The celebration that began with a TB street festival on Friday, raised awareness on the adverse socio-economic and health consequences of TB in the city.
The platform of the Active City Development’s Walk and Yoga for Life was used for the occasion.
He said the capital city had 25 TB treatment facilities and urged patients to continue their treatment.
“TB patients should take medicine like food every day,” Parkop said. “They should be committed to the prescribed time to treat TB. Never give up until advised otherwise by health officers.
“If you do not follow the prescription, the probability is high that TB is developed into multi-drug resistance stage.”
Dr Morumai Ipai of the NCD health unit said TB was curable and its treatment free.
He said PNG was among the four countries in the Western Pacific region with the most TB cases. He urged residents to protect officers visiting settlements and suburbs.
