NCD Governor Powes Parkop says there is an urgent need to hold more cultural festivals and similar events in a fast-developing multi-cultural city like Port Moresby.

He said that at the New Ireland Day on Wednesday at Murray Barracks, organised by University of PNG students, which was co-sponsored by the NCDC with K10,000 and attended by hundreds of people.

“This year, the NCDC has made a conscious decision to support all the provincial days in our capital city,” Parkop said.

“We have made this decision because the city is made up of people from all 21 provinces, and including NCD, we have 22.

“The city will not be where it is now, or go into the future, without the provinces.

“Provinces provide manpower, finance to the city, to the national government, through tax, to NCDC, and we are able to develop our city.

“We have major infrastructure developments, we are hosting the Pacific Games, and we are hosting APEC in 2018.

“This would not have been possible without the provinces.

“Our city doesn’t have coconut plantations, coffee plantations, oil, gas, gold or copper.

“This is why the NCDC has made a conscious decision to give K10,000 to each of our provincial groups in the city so you all can celebrate your provincial day.

“You help us to create a good environment, a secure environment, a peaceful environment by which we can build our country from our capital city.”

Parkop said such mini-shows were the way to go in the city.
