THE Sir Hubert Murray Stadium will become the venue for the Motu-Koita Rugby League (MKRL) starting next year, with an increased sponsorship from K50,000 to K100,000.
National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop made the announcement during the grand final at the PNG Football Stadium over the weekend.
Parkop urged the league management to include a women’s division.
He said the stadium would be opened for use before the end of this year.
In the match, a try by Tatana Island Dolphins captain and half-back Beika Boe helped his team beat Vikings 12-8 to claim the MKRL Powes Parkop Cup and K8,000. Vikings walked away with K4,000.
“Vikings and Dolphins, what a great game,” Parkop told the teams.
“Dolphins, you are rookies but you have done yourselves proud.
“Vikings, you did not win but I think everybody won.
“Dolphins can go home with the Cup but Vikings can hold their heads high. You played very well. It was anybody’s game so everybody needs to be congratulated.”
Speaking before the prize presentation, he said the atmosphere during the match was great.
“It was not only a great game on the field but off it as well,” Parkop said.
“This is what the game is about.
“It is about community members coming together as one to embrace the game and use it to lift ourselves.
“That is why I, as your governor and patron, am proud to support it.
“It is a win for all of us. The game was a win for both teams, the league, Tatana and all other Motu-Koitabu villages.”
He commended the league management and the teams for a successful year, saying he was looking forward to a bigger and better competition.
Parkop said he would continue to work with his deputy and Motu-Koita Assembly chairman Dadi Toka Jr to develop the tournament.
League acting chairman Arthur Patrick thanked Parkop and the National Capital District Commission for their support.
