NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop says he plans to convert Port Moresby into an environmentally friendly city.
“I want us to plant a million trees and also want us to use LNG gas to provide electricity,” Parkop said.
“I want us to move away from the use of fossil fuel.”
Parkop made the comments were celebrating the World Environment Day at the Adventure Park outside Port Moresby on Wednesday.
“We got gas coming in from Hela, Western and Gulf. This gas is for export but we can use it in Port Moresby to generate electricity and run all the vehicles as well,” Parkop said.
“That will make a difference and will reduce the cost of fuel and provide us with clean energy.
“I have been pushing for the domestic use of gas to be increased so we can be allowed to developed that sector.
“I have asked former Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, former Petroleum and Energy Minister Dr Fabian Pok on the issue and I will ask the current Prime Minister James Marape as well.
“We can develop a domestic gas sector. Converting gas to use in cars, planes and even in future we can use it in trains.”
Parkop said the Climate Change Development Authority needed to look into carbon trading in order for land owners to preserve their forests as part of conservation.
