One-thousand children in Port Moresby have received a Christmas treat this year at the cinema– thanks to National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop, Paradise Cinema and Ilimo Milk.
Parkop made it possible for the children to watch Christmas movies with Ilimo Milk refreshments on Friday at Vision City.
The treat was for children from lower-income families.
Parkop said 4000 children had benefitted from the programme since its inception in 2014.
“The whole idea is to bring our children, especially those in lower-income bracket, for a treat and that is to see a movie in this place where many of them can’t afford on their own,” he said.
Parkop said it was important that children must have a sense of inclusiveness and are cared for.
“Bringing them here through this partnership programme instils in them a mind of having a place in the city,” he said.
“When I became governor in 2007, one of the first things that I did was to set up children’s play facilities all around the city. Some of them are still in good condition and others are partly rundown.
“The main reason that we came up with the children’s play facilities in the city was to make it a place for them, so that as they grow into adulthood they will have fond memories of their childhood in this city.
“It is vital to create an environment where children can be children.
“They must have a conducive environment to play and have fun together, grow up to develop creative minds and use their talents to become better, resourceful and healthy citizens tomorrow.”
Parkop thanked Ilimo Milk for becoming a programme partner for the first time.
He encouraged other companies to get on board next year to help create a better environment for the children. The general manager of Vision City Mega Mall, Anderson Ting, said that he was happy to be a partner in the children’s programme and hoped for it to continue.
