NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has condemned the actions of soldiers from Taurama Barracks who went on a rampage at the University of PNG’s medical faculty last Sunday.

“We all feel your pain,” Parkop, a former university students’ leader, told the UPNG students’ protest march at Waigani last Thursday.

“I condemn this action of the military against students. I do not accept this kind of attitude. It is unbecoming of a disciplined force.

“I want police investigations to go ahead so that criminal charges can be laid against them.”

Parkop said he was also concerned about the police complaint of a shortage of manpower in Port Moresby, the reason for their not attending to the problem at the medical faculty.

He said there were only about 800 police personnel in Port Moresby to serve about 700,000 people.

“The government is looking at how we can build the capacity of police,” Parkop said.
