National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has challenged city residents during the Active City Walk and Yoga for Life on Sunday to make a commitment to their health and wellbeing.
Parkop, Minister for Housing and Urbanisation and Moresby North-East MP John Kaupa, Sohe MP Henry Amuli and Central Bougainville MP Sam Akoita led thousands of city dwellers who took to the streets for their own health, wellness and fitness.
Some organisations who participated in the fitness walk included the Papua New Guinea Defence Force, Kumul Training Institute, Asia Pacific Institute of Applied Social Economic and Technical Studies and Jubilee Catholic Secondary School.
Despite the stop to public buses for pick-up and drop-off, a good number of city residents showed up for the walk.
Parkop reaffirmed that the bus service was discontinued because the buses were vandalised.
He said it was costly because public funds, which should have been spent on electricity, schools and hospitals, were spent on the hiring of buses.
“Let us make a commitment for our own health, wellness and fitness,” he said.
“You are doing fine for yourself, change starts with you. There is no short cuts in life, do the hard yards.”
