THE Electoral Commission has the moral and constitutional responsibility to conduct fair and free elections in the country, National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop said.
He said the commission must inform the people of PNG and the international community that the election preparations were ready and that all elections would  be conducted fairly and transparently.
He said the deferral of election by parliament was not an attempt to hang on to power as many people thought. All they wanted to ensure was a fair, free and smooth election.
Tari MP James Marape asked Trawen if the commissioner had any powers under the provisions of the organic law on national and local level government to defer the election for two or three months to fully prepare for it.
Trawen said he had used that power to defer it by three weeks within the three months period.
He called on MPs and intending candidates to go back to their electorates to check the rolls that had been dispatched.
so that they were not late for the objection period which should expire on May 18.
