Parliament passes eight Bills to reform higher education

PARLIAMENT yesterday passed eight Bills on the development of higher education reform to transfer post-secondary higher education institutions to the Department Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST).
They are the Higher Education and Technical Education Reform Bill 2020 (Reform Bill), Higher Education General Provisions (Amendment) Bill 2020, Education (Amendment) Bill 2020, National Training Council (Amendment) Bill 2020, the University of PNG (Amendment) Bill 2020, PNG University of Technology (Amendment) Bill 2020, the Papua New Guinean University of Natural Resources and Environment (Amendment) Bill 2020 and the University of Goroka (Amendment) Bill 2020.
Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Nick Kuman said the outcome of the reform would increase the number of enrolments and improve the quality of graduates in high education institutions that met industry demands and needs.

  • Reforms should also look into the physical and facilities restructures and reforms, not only the programs and systems. The aging infrastructures need changes.

  • The reform should address these three things: 1. Programs
    2. Infrastructure
    3. Staff Development
    This goes for all higher institutions.
