PARLIAMENTARY leaders are stepping up to get the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine which are expiring on July 18 and 29.
National Pandemic Response deputy controller Dr Daoni Esorom said there were still 80,000 doses in the provinces with those sent to Western, Western Highlands and East Sepik set to expire on July 18 and the rest sent to other provinces on July 29.
National Planning and Monitoring Minister Rainbo Paita, who was at the Jackson International Airport to receive the 200,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccines from China on Wednesday urged the people to come forward and get vaccinated.
Paita said he took the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine on Tuesday and that he did not suffer from any sickness or side effects.
He dismissed all the misinformation and conspiracy theories on social media that had caused acceptance hesitancy.
“It is healthy to see that kind of energy put into debates on the vaccines,” he said.
“However, the country have suffered from issues such as drug (marijuana) and substance abuse, but we do not see those types of debates happening.
“Marijuana, homebrew and other substances are the factors that affect and kill the younger population, yet, we do not talk about it.
“The vaccine is something that attempts to slow down and end the pandemic so we encourage the people to take the vaccine.
“Leaders are taking part.”
