Partnership aims to build capacity

THE New Ireland government aims to improve the standard of education in the province by engaging Queensland’s Marist College Ashgrove to assist with capacity building.
A contingent from Marist College led by principal Peter McLoughlin visited Kavieng last Monday.
Governor Sir Julius Chan, who is a former Marist College student, administrator Lamiller Pawut, Mactil Bais and other officials met with McLoughlin’s group.
The New Ireland government will use its Governor’s School of Excellence, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart International School (OLSH) as the central point for capacity building for teachers from around the province and also give students a world class education as it already had the necessary resources.
“The school is already engaging teachers from other schools in the province to undertake training and to work with the teachers at the OLSH,” Bais said.
“Up to 50 students from around New Ireland are also attending the school as part of the programme.
“OLSH is an internationally-accredited school so we are certain that all students will get a world class education in the facility with the help from Marist College.”
Bias said Marist College had agreed to assist but it would be on a short term capacity building basis because Australia’s education system was different and also their teachers would need incentives to come to New Ireland.
Sir Julius attended Marist College from 1954 to 1958.
and appreciates the standards and principles the school is built on.
