Partnership sets up police call centre

PORT Moresby residents can now call Police Toll Free number 1800100 for assistance.
NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou said he expected 90 per cent of the residents to call this number as it was free.
N’dranou told The National that the number would operate 24/7 at the police operation centre to support all police stations in the city.
He said despite transportation and fuel problems, they had done well by having the free communication in place through partnership with Telikom PNG.
N’dranou said NCD police personnel were the ones to deliver the service to the public, therefore, he urged all police personnel to do their best to attend every call.
When signing the memorandum of understanding with Telikom PNG yesterday, he said partners, government agencies, departments and the people in NCD must not complain if they don’t contribute to helping policing services.
“No police force in the world can survive without partnership and if you don’t invest, that’s the reference you would have,” he said.
“For Telikom to answer that, I believe this is the start because by doing so it will give challenge to other stakeholders and the partners.”
N’Dranou said police personnel would be working in partnership with Telikom PNG to help reduce crimes and terrorism in NCD.
According to Telikom PNG chief executive officer Xavier Victor, the agreement was subjected to review after three years and almost K200,000 was the total cost for the toll free call centre and the internet services.
Victor said the service they provided was a toll free service to ensure that NCD citizens were able to connect and communicate with the police centre here on any emergency situation that needed police attention.
“These numbers will be visible on all police vehicles here in NCD so people can be able to see and can be able to make contact with the police,” he said.
