TRADE Union Congress president John Paska has thanked those who took part in a peaceful protest march last Wednesday against the deferral of the elections.
University of Papua New Guinea students joined workers and non-governmental organisations to petition the government’s decision.
Parliament, on April 5, voted to defer the elections by six months.
Electoral Commission Andrew Trawen confirmed that the elections would be held as scheduled on June 23, the only change being the issuing of writs on May 18 instead of April 27 as previously gazetted.
In a press conference in Port Moresby last Friday, Paska said he was overwhelmed by the success of the march.
He said even though the march was rowdy, the people ensured it was peaceful.
“I want to thank the UPNG students, the trade and union workers, NGOs, women’s groups, churches and school children for demonstrating their rights in a peaceful manner,” he said.
“I’m so proud of the students for always showing passion.
“I also want to thank students from Unitech and Divine Word and the business community in other towns for their support.
“It shows that the government must not tamper with democracy and civil liberty and must remain with the people.”
