SEVENTH-Day Adventists in Port Moresby were yesterday challenged to read the Bible more and to tell others about Jesus Christ.
Dr Aaron Lopa, a lecturer in theology at the Pacific Adventist University, told church members during the opening of Adventist Week at the Sir John Guise Stadium that they should not only claim to be “men of the Book” but also to read the Book daily.
“We believe that the word of God is the centre of the church. Read the book (Bible),” Lopa said.
He told the church members that as they celebrated Adventist doctrines, lifestyle and music, they should bear in mind its origin and its mission.
“You are not just any man or woman. You were created by God and this week, we should look back at where we came from –  the hand of God,” he said.
Lopa encouraged the church to continue evangelising to others “so they can know Christ too”.
“When we stop winning people, we cease to be a church. Evangelism is the heart of the church. We preach the Word so people can change.”
President of the church’s Central Papua Conference Pr Tony Kemo urged members to be faithful in worship to God, spreading of the Gospel and provision of health, education and other services.
“Let us showcase our faith and God’s love to others this week,” Kemo said.
More than 2,000 Adventist turned up for the opening ceremony as early as 6am.
Adventurers, Pathfinders, ambassadors, youth and women turned up in uniforms for a march lead by the Royal PNG Constabulary band from the Unagi oval to the Sir John Guise Stadium.
Speeches and singing were held at the stadium.
Activities this week will include preaching at eight venues in the city, clean-a-thon, health talks and others. The programme ends next Sunday with a fun-run.
