POLICE in Wau-Bulolo, Morobe, last Friday witnessed a peace reconciliation ceremony at Wau Police Station following the killing of a youth from Waria in 2019.
The peace ceremony came after Waria people had blamed the Mape people of Finschhafen, who reside at Sandy Creek, for the murder of the youth after a retaliation by Mape people over the robbing and wounding of a Mape woman at Wau market in 2019. During the peace ceremony, Mape people paid K5,000, a pig worth K1,800 and food stuff to the family of the victim. Wau Police Station commander Insp Leo Kaikas applauded both sides for taking the initiative to establish peace among themselves and the public at large. Morobe police commander Chief Insp John Daviaga while commending the efforts of the people, said compensation payments made to resolve a criminal case was not allowed by law and police would still bring those responsible for the killing to justice.
