THREE Highlands provinces were reportedly quiet during New Year, according to the western end divisional police commander.
Asst Comm Kaiglo Ambane said Hela, Southern Highlands and Enga were generally peaceful in the lead-up and over New Year’s day compared with past years.
He said apart from one death in an accident in Tari town, minor problems occurring in tribal fighting areas mainly due to consumption of alcohol, a payback killing and suspected arson, New Year celebrations were peaceful.
A road accident in Tari claimed one life and injured five others on Tuesday night, ACP Ambane said.
He said six men were drinking and driving around in a vehicle and had an accident near Tari Airport. The driver died.
Two state houses at Nipa Station were burnt. “There is nothing much happening in Hela and Southern highlands, I want to commend the people for a peaceful festive.”
