Sixteen-year-old Miriam Peni made it through to the final of the 100m at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Apia yesterday.

A total of 28 athletes from all over the Commonwealth entered the girls 100m and Peni placed third in her first round heat in a time of  12.53sec and was fourth in the semi final. Her time of 12.40  was just good enough to get her into the final as one of the two fastest apart from the first three in each of the two semi finals who qualified automatically for the final. Peni improved her time in the final to 12.38 seconds which earned her sixth place. Nigerian girls were first and second, a Scotland, New Zealand and India finished.

“This is a very good effort from Miriam and a significant achievement for her”  said Athletics PNG President Tony Green upon hearing the news.”

For Miriam to run three rounds in one day and post better times in each race shows that she has prepared well  with her coach Vic Pascoe.
