THE Papua New Guinea stall at the Pacifika or the 11th Festival Of Pacific Arts village attracted many visitors, with the colourful bilums, baskets and the traditional penis gourds from Angoram, East Sepik province, being the main attractions.
Many walked to the PNG stall and came across a long unusual men’s traditional underwear called a “penis gourd”.
Bertha Saki, from Angoram, who displayed the penis gourd, said it was made from bush fibre and decorated using red and black soil. She said it took a day to make one.
“It has been a tradition passed down from their forefathers to their young generation and is still being used today in cultural ceremonies,” she told visitors.
The traditional penis guard has since attracted local and international tourists.
Some said they had never seen anything like that but were happy to learn from the culture and traditions of PNG. It is commonly used by men in East Sepik and West Sepik provinces during cultural occasions.
