MEMBERS of three wards on Bipi Island in the Bisakani-Soparabau local level government (LLG) of Lorengau, Manus, have helped police arrest youths involved with homebrew.
According to Manus police commander Chief Insp David Yapu, 25 youths from Maso, Matahai and Salapai were rounded up by ward members and ward development committee members and transported by boat to the Lorengau Police Station.
Chief Insp Yapu said the suspects consumed homebrew and became nuisance in the community.
He explained that such arrangement was done after Manus Governor Charlie Benjamin and a team of policemen attended to Bipi Island on April 26 to conducted awareness on Covid 19.
He told The National that ward members and the community were concerned about the continuous homebrew consumption and nuisance in the community by young men during the state of emergency.
Chief Insp Yapu said the attitude of young men on the island was causing fear among people.
He said they were in police custody and would be dealt with accordingly.
He thanked the ward members for making the job of police easier by transporting the suspects by boat to the police station.
Chief Insp Yapu also thanked Benjamin for providing transportation of the suspects to Lorengau.
He appealed to the young men to change their attitude and behaviour for behavioural change in their attitude.
“It is not just happening on Bipi Island, but also in other wards in Manus and we are trying our best with limited resources to attend to these issues,” he said.
“I am now asking all leaders in the community to help police by bringing those involved in consuming drugs (marijuana) or homebrew to police so that they can have a safer and a better place to live.”
