THE people affected by the earthquake in Southern Highlands need relief supplies such as food, water, shelter, and medicine, says acting provincial administrator Thomas Eluh.
Eluh is also the chairman of the provincial disaster committee, assisted by Joseph Tondop, the provincial police commander.
He told The National in Mendi on Friday that more than 1500 people, who needed relief supplies, were living at the Pimaga Care Centre in the Nipa-Kutubu district.
Eluh said they did not have money because the provincial budget had not been approved.
He said the number of people arriving at the care centre was increasing every day and posed a health risk as well.
“What they need right now is water, food, shelter, and medication,” he said.
Eluh commended the Government for allocating K450 million for the disaster-affected provinces.
He said he didn’t know how soon the funds would be released to the provinces for relief operation.
Eluh said International Red Cross officers came to assess the situation and went back.
“Due to communication problems, we are still in dark whether other organisations will come and help us,” he said.
