People not taking Covid-19 seriously

Letters

THE Government needs to come clean on its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic in Papua New Guinea.
All responsible agencies should also come clean with honesty and integrity on how they have handled the testing and numbering of already confirmed cases (now 401, as of Aug 23).
I must admit that about 90 per cent of PNG’s population is still in suspense, myself included, as to where exactly the tests are done, and whether those case numbers, rapidly increasing, are factually reported.
Are they true? Are they genuine? Where are all these numbers coming from?
Who is giving out those numbers? Are all those numbers coming from Institute of Medical Research or from other laboratories?
Look at the people in Port Moresby (PNG’s Covid-19 hotspot), most of them don’t really care to wear face masks as recommended by the health authorities.
Why is that? I’ll tell you why. The reason is simple; people don’t really trust the statistics.
I have been around the city and as expected, most of our police, military, and some health professionals are not wearing face masks.
Even if they wear one, they put it right below their chin, not covering what it should cover, mouth, and nose.
I think something is not right here.
There’s a great tendency that the people are being misled.
Our professional journalists are being given wrong information, thus giving us wrong information through the mainstream media.
Take stroll down to a market place and see for yourself.
It is business as usual and many people are not wearing face masks and keep safe social distancing.
People are still hugging, hand shaking, PMV busses are still filing up, and chewers are still using the same lime to chew.
Very interesting right? Unbelievable!
I love my people, and I hope that the feedback from this letter will benefit the entire population.
