A COMMUNITY in Goroka, Eastern Highlands, was lost for words when its neighbourhood road that had been neglected for 10 years was repaired over the weekend.

Workmen from the Goroka district Works unit arrived on Saturday afternoon and worked until Sunday, upgrading the Segu Housing Commission Road.

It is one of two neglected access roads that serves more than 2000 people in the Segu and nearby Genoka areas.

The community raised the issue  of the poor state of the road early this year and was assured by MP Bire Kimisopa that it would be fixed.

Community leader Francis Maima said he was happy Kimisopa had kept his word.

“Our road had crater-like potholes and it was used by the community to dump rubbish,” Maima said.

“The road was inaccessible because of neglect over may years and no vehicles travelled this way.

“On rainy days, the road becomes impassable for vehicles.”

Maima said with the waste dumped on the road, the place had become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and posed a health risk.

“We are grateful that the local MP and authorities have heard our cries and fixed this road,” Maima said.

“This is the first stage of the upgrading work so we want a proper drainage to be built and the road to be sealed with bitumen.”
